Nikki & Terry

We found our love for providing self catering accommodation through Airbnb, where we hosted 100’s of visitors over 10 years. We love it, and our customers thought we were good at it – resulting in us achieving 5 star ratings and Superhost status.

We love our new home in Princetown and our new adventure, but mostly we love looking after our guests and providing a warm and safe environment from which you can explore the moors.

 History

The Ramblers’ Rest

The Ramblers’ Rest is now a guesthouse in what was The Railway Inn, an 18th Century former hotel and public house in the centre of Princetown.

Our self-catering accommodation concept was born around new safety protocols necessary in a global pandemic and designed around our challenging English weather, and the practicalities for accommodation for walkers and cyclists.

Today

The Ramblers’ Rest

Self Catering Accommodation

Our new guest house concept focuses on the needs of travellers on the moors, catering for all holidaymakers, but being at the heart of beautiful Dartmoor, we have added some useful touches for ramblers, cyclists and dog owners.

It is ideal for a post-Covid staycation.

We stayed there for two nights to do some Dartmoor exploring. It was a really pleasant stay and the host did their best to make us welcome. Dog-friendly property with all amenities, so you can feel comfortable. The dining is not available on site, however Prince of Wales pub is just two hundred yards away, and it serves great food and local ales. We shall be back.

The Ramblers Rest is such a brilliant combination of friendly bunkhouse and comfortable hotel room. This was our second visit and we would recommend it to anyone visiting Dartmoor, especially if you want to do some walking.

It was lovely. I've paid more and stayed in places worse than this. Had a proper kitchen, bath, sofa. Everything looked really clean. Friendly staff. It's a shame we only stayed one night because that's a room we could have happily stayed there for multiple days as it had everything we could need.

What a great find, we needed a stopover in our camp van after a trail race on the Moor. We arrived at 9.30 in the evening and parked up, welcomed by Nikki even at such a time. Much appreciated. Basic facilities but everything we needed including a hot shower. Fantastic outdoor shower with lovely hot water and dark skies above. Will definitely use again, great value, great location. Thank you.

My chap and I were worried about where to stay but we're recommend this place by a lovely family who were also staying . The owners were fabulous and a joy to talk to . The room was perfect for our needs and very clean and tidy considering we called on the off chance . When we came In we were given a short tour of the honesty breakfast area and were shown to our room with the help of the owners dog who's a good boy ! The bathroom was immaculate and the shower was amazing (especially after a long ride !) I would absolutely recommend this wonderful little Inn and the owners! A great nights sleep and off on our travels again . Thank you so much ! Sophie and hench x

I stayed in room 5 and had a comfortable and really country-feel stay..I loved the drying room which allowed me to manage my hiking socks 🙂 but most of all I loved the hospitality Nikki and Terry gave and the convenience of simply walking a few yards to the path which took me onto the spectacular moors. Other highlights were the ice creams and local pub.

Restaurants

We really are spoiled for choice with restaurants and cafes right on our doorstep. From great pub lunches to cafes, you won’t be left wanting.

Bars & Lounges

For a small village we are spoilt with choice for Bars within a short walk. The Prince of Wales, The Forest Inn and the Dartmoor Inn give ample choice with some lovely local beers.

Sight Seeing

The National Park Visitor Centre is across the road from us with a nice little gallery and Sherlock Holmes exhibition. Further along we have the infamous Dartmoor prison. A nice walk away we have Foggintor Quarry which is well worth a visit, plus the very lovely clapper bridge at Postbridge.

Beaches

Although located in the heart of Dartmoor, we are still within a comfortable driving distance of some fantastic beaches on both Devon and Cornwall’s north and south coasts.

Devon offers a wealth of beaches,  for example: Wembury, Bovisands, Bigbury, Bantham and many more.

In Cornwall  there are also many options but you may wish to visit the ragged coast of Tintagel or the fantastic long white beach at Whitsands Bay

Outdoor & Adventure

Of course there are no end of lovely walks and cycle routes from Princetown. The National Park Visitor Centre is open daily and located just across the road from the Rambler’s Rest, ready to give a wealth of advice on the many activities available.

Day Trips

As Princetown is in the heart of Dartmoor, day trips to all over Dartmoor become easy. The city of Plymouth, a real southern gem, is only 30 minutes drive if you fancy a day in town.

Art & Culture

Dartmoor is dotted with fabulous little galleries; Devon Guild of Craftsmen, Brownston Art Gallery, Delamere House, Stone Lane Gardens, Three Hares Gallery, Ashburn Gallery, the Thelma Hulbert Gallery and many more.

Then there is Furstown Garden & Tea Rooms, The House of Marbles, Dartington Crystal, The Box, Powderham Castle, and Buckland Abbey.

The Palace Theatre, Paignton, Babbacombe Theatre & Theatre Royal are also available if you would like some drama at the end of the day.

Check In & Check Out

Check in is anytime after 3pm, please let us know if you expect to arrive after 10pm.  If possible please message us a rough time of arrival, so that we can ensure we are around to show you to your room.  Please check out by 11.00am on day of departure.  For minimal contact, we recommend that you leave your key in your door and send us a quick text to let us know that you are leaving although we welcome the chance to speak to you at the end of your stay.  Please remember to open your window and leave the door open, to help air the room.
